Chapter 3 of The Disciplines of Emergency Management: Mitigation describes mitigation as “a sustained action to reduce or eliminate risk to people and property from hazards and their effects.” The chapter further discussed how implementing mitigation programs and activities requires the participation and support of a broad spectrum of stakeholders, both within and outside emergency management circles. Furthermore, the authors make a number of important distinctions between mitigation and the other emergency management disciplines, particularly preparedness.

In addition, both Chapter 3 and the National Mitigation Framework resource (introduced in this module) described the roles and responsibilities of various actors having an impact on the field of emergency management. In particular, the whole Community approach to achieving goals was emphasized.

Taking into consideration the above material, please identify a mitigation activity in which your organization or community has been involved, and critically analyze this activity in terms of the following:

• Describe the mitigation project.

• Who was involved (public agencies, private organizations, NGO’s, etc.). Were there any similarities or differences from those listed in the applicable learning units?

• What impact did the mitigation project have on your community and/or organization? Please be specific.
