THE MODULE YOU NEED TO READ IS EVERYTHING BELOW

THE ROLE OF THE CRITICISM

WHY DO WE NEED THEATRE CRITICISM?

FORMAL CRITICISM is that which is written by professional critics and distributed to the public through the media, newspapers, magazines, internet, TV and radio.

WE ARE ALL CRITICS – INFORMAL CRITICISM

Every one of us, has certain opinions about whether a given thing is either good or bad. Those opinions are rooted in who we are, our age, gender, cultural background, educational level and where we live. Our likes and dislikes are not based upon any formal training or previous experience. Our expression of these likes and dislikes through in person conversations, social media or other means is referred to as INFORMAL CRITICISM or WORD OF MOUTH.

Then, there are FORMAL PROFESSIONAL CRITICS that are empowered to create specific criticism on content. They could review movies, plays, food… anything. What makes these critics any different from us? They may have training as a writer or a given subject area. More often it is more subtle than that.

Unknown-2-1.jpeg

Formal Critics have a superior knowledge about a particular piece of creative content simply because they have either a previous experience or they have researched what they are reviewing in advance. Can you imagine if every time you went to see a play or movie that you did exhaustive research about its author, director, actors and content? The truth is you don’t. We rely on criticism then to provide information about what we will experience, describe it to us and then evaluate it.

Hybrid forms of both INFORMAL and FORMAL CRITICISM include awards granted such as the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS or the TONY AWARDS which are voted upon by the theatre community.

Unknown-1.png images-7.jpeg

Modern producers of creative content depend very much on both INFORMAL and FORMAL CRITICISM to drive audiences to their productions. Now that audiences can use social media to communicate their experiences, they can have a tremendous influence on the sucess of failure of a production.

The Broadway hit WICKED (2004) only received one Tony Award when it first opened. However, word of mouth propelled the production into the tremendous hit it is today.

SPRING AWAKENING – 70TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS

DEAR EVAN HANSEN – 2017

THE BAND’S VISIT – 2018 TONY AWARD WINNER FOR BEST MUSICAL

Criticism then, offers us a guide to what is produced. Formal critics can describe, interpret and evaluate creative content for us. However, ulitmately it is the audience that will determine what it wants to experience.

Read the attached article, and then respond to the question at the top in this space. Feel free to comment on other students’ postings. attached below (Ancient China)

Part 2A

Choosing a Topic

For this assignment, you will identify a topic that interests you, write a summary about that topic. Write a formal summary similar to a course assignment but you will not do any research, you will not cite your sources nor use any quotes. Write your summary based on your current knowledge about your topic.

The research in this course will address your summary assignment. Thus choose a topic that you are interested in, that you are passionate about, it may be a hobby or a topic relevant to your career, this will make the research process easier and perhaps even fun?

Once your submission is graded you will strategize about how to search for information on your topic by selecting keywords. Your will determine the kind of resources you will need, for example, do you need encyclopedias for background information, books, scholarly or informative articles or websites.

Your will use our college library to locate two non-fiction books and three informative or scholarly articles from Taft College Library. (Links to an external site.)

Submission Instructions for Research Summary Assignment

Include your name and course information, followed by your summary, and the following (note that the questions should be in bold typeface but your answers should not be in bold typeface):

  1. What is your research topic?
  2. What is a specific research question related to your topic, that you would like to explore through your research in this class?
  3. What are some keywords related to your topic?
  4. Will you be using this research in another class, or at work? If so, please indicate how you will be using it, and the nature of the other course or work assignment.

Submit your answers to the questions in doc, docx, or pdf format.

Use this sample assignment (Attched below) to format your paper in Times New Roman, 12 points.

Part 2B

Once you have worked on an open-ended research question you may begin searching for your sources. When you experience difficulties in finding your sources go back to your keywords and think of synonyms or different keywords.

Keywords can be words or phrases directly stated in your research question. They can also be words or phrases that are related to the topic but not explicitly stated in your research question, such as synonyms or related concepts.

Think about your topic and research question, then explore and write down all the possible words you could use that might yield relevant results.

Discussion;

On December 11, 2018, college student Gunnar Hassard was arrested and charged with a violation of New York State Penal Code Section 240.31(3), a felony for Aggravated Harassment, which is classified as a hate crime. Hassard posted flyers on poles, a building and a public board students utilize for public notifications and political events. The flyers were posted over the Jewish Holiday of Hanukkah. The flyer was a recreation of a movie poster from a 1967 satirical film called “The Producers” which included a picture of Adolph Hitler, a swastika, a German city, a yellow smiley face next to Hitler and the words “Don’t be stupid, be a smarty and join the Nazi Party”. The New York law bans the swastika under certain circumstances and deems it as intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm another person.

Review New York Penal Code 240.31(3) Link. (Links to an external site.) Compare the Penal Code section with the the New York criminal cases of People v. Dietze Link (Links to an external site.) and People v. Golb (section III) Link (Links to an external site.) Utilizing the cases and your textbook to discuss the following questions;

1). Do you think the the law passes constitutional scrutiny, is vague, or is it overbroad? Why?

2). Do you think the government can or should criminalize a symbol and utilize it’s mere presence as criminal intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm?

Part 3B

In response to federal policy and service requirements, health insurance plans are increasingly developing high-deductible insurance policies and narrow networks. These types of policies require the consumer to pay more out-of-pocket. To portray this in a positive light, this trend has been labeled as “consumer-based” to suggest that the consumer must pay more from their own funds and, thus, encourage consumers to make better health care choices. However, this could be labeled as a burden on the consumer.

Write a 350- to 525-word article that identifies and evaluates the impact that federal or state health care policies are having on consumer costs. Explore both positive and negative effects.

Publish the article on your own social media account (e.g., LinkedIn, Facebook, etc.), or post it on a health care message board of your choice.

Include a citation of your article in your assignment.

Cite 3 reputable references to support your assignment (e.g., trade or industry publications, government or agency websites, scholarly works, or other sources of similar quality).

For this assignment your will follow the instructions Thinking about your own program complete the right column of the Idea and Asset Building Chart providing the specifics about how you would implement the ideas in the left hand column. the chart is attached so you can complete the right column.Below are resources to help fill in the asset building chart

    Camp and the Developmental Assets

The Search Institute Developmental Assets® are 40 common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults. Because of its basis in youth development, resiliency, and prevention research and its proven effectiveness, the Developmental Assets framework has become one of the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States.

The following is an article from the Search Institute website. As you read the article, think about how you integrate asset building into your camp programs.

    Camping and Asset Building

Camping experiences hold tremendous opportunities to build Developmental Assets. They take young people away from their everyday environment and, at their best, create an asset-rich experience for the campers, linking them with caring adults and older youth, engaging them in stimulating, challenging activities, developing leadership skills, and cultivating positive peer relationships. Though individual camper experiences varied, a major study of camps by the American Camp Association found that, overall, children, parents, and camp staff all reported improvements in positive identity, social skills, physical and thinking skills, and positive values and spirituality.

Consider these ideas for integrating asset building into day camps and overnight camping programs:

    • Create getting-to-know-you activities and community-building activities
    • Define boundaries and expectations for campers and staff
    • Recognize that some young people may not have experience with camping. They may resist trying certain camping activities because of their inexperience—or their fear of failure.
    • Considering your population, encourage young people to write to their families (electronically or via snail mail)
    • Integrate a service project for the campers
    • Train camp counselors to be role models.
    • Build in time during programming to discuss and reflect on activities
    • Create camping opportunities that challenge young people to build on their skills
    • Engage young people in leadership roles in your camp by older youth people teach children certain skills or lead occasional activities.
    • Emphasize an experiential educational aspect to your program.
    • Encourage & train staff, volunteers, camp counselors, and young people everyone to build assets for each other.
    • Empower young people by giving them choices during activities. For example, if you have a craft activity, consider having two or three possible outcomes that use the same materials. (Or offer two to three different crafts.)
